Day 61 – patience pays

“What you are looking for and what you find, are often very different and amazing at the same time.” Me

the moth and the black-eyed Susan, a native prairie flower

Yesterday afternoon, Ivy and I sat in the backyard and watched for birds. At least I was looking for birds. Ivy lay patiently at my feet and scanned the edges of the garden. I did see a bunny or two, I am certain Ivy did as well.

my view with Ivy scanning too

It was time well spent. It was relaxing and almost as good as taking a nap, almost.

I observed several bird species including robins, cardinals, and sparrows, I think as well as other species. I also saw a several butterflies and hummingbirds, before I took out my camera.

I was looking for the source of the activity in thicket in the corner of the backyard, when I found the moth atop a black-eyed Susan, hence the quote above.

My afternoon was inspired by my daughter, O, who captured a hummingbird in the front yard. I a couple of hummingbirds flitting from flower to flower along the garden’s edge but didn’t have my camera out, when I did, the hummingbirds were done for the afternoon.

inspired by O. In the middle of the photo is hummingbird….

It was a good way to spend a small slice of an afternoon in the shade; I’ll need to make a point to take more time to just watch and see what happens in my own backyard.

It’s Saturday and it’s already a great day. I slept well and woke up refreshed ready for the day and my list. There are two more weekends before I return to school. It’s been a great summer in so many ways and it’s the point in summer when I am ready to get back to a regular schedule of up and out. So, I’d better jump up, jump in, and seize the day. It could possibly be the best day ever. Making the Days Count, one day at a time, stopping to look around and see what I find.

When was the last time you found something unexpected? What was it?

  1. Well, you can absolutely be sure that here in England it won’t be hummingbirds. How wonderful. But on recent nights, we have seen a badger, and a fox. Very different, but just as fine in their own ways. Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

    1. Even though we are very ‘suburban,’ there is quite a bit of wildlife around us, too. I am reminded how little I know or have noticed before. I am sure there is something I miss that’s hiding in plain sight. Saturday was an amazing day and Sunday is shaping up to be a great one, as well. Hope your week ahead brings a little rain and relief from the drought.
