It’s Memorial Day weekend and I am reminded I started this blog on a Memorial Day weekend fifteen years ago. Somehow, I’ve kept it going.
Along the way, I’ve gained some amazing friends all of whom I know only through Making the Days Count. I have met a few and even stayed in one’s bed and breakfast – twice.
After school let out for the weekend, I climbed in the car and drove north. A lot of folks had a similar idea and what can be a five and half hour drive stretched into a seven hour plus drive. But when I arrived, my family was here, the dogs greeted me enthusiastically, and the stars were shining brightly.

I’ll be driving home Monday so I can teach six more days, really four, but the kiddos are in school for six more school days. School’s out Tuesday, June 3rd, and my summer break OFFICIALLY begins after noon on Wednesday, the fourth. It’s going to be a great summer.
Today is going to be a great day. I am going to continue to write and keep making the days count like I have for the past fifteen summers. Last Monday, I reminded my students that the four days next week are going to count. So, I’d better jump up, jump in, and seize the day. Making the Days COUNT, one day at a time, looking up, looking down, looking all around.
What are seeing when you look around?
Wait…schools almost over again? It seems (to me) that you were just traveling between baseball fields…but I’m sure it doesn’t seem like yesterday to you! LOL. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with your summer this year! Nice stars too!
I have not yet planned my baseball trips for the summer. I have ONE ballpark left – Boston and Fenway Park, but I have trip to Europe in July before going back in mid-August. Summer is time to make the days count. Thank you for stopping in.
Fifteen years?!? Good for you!! I’m so thankful our paths crossed and I feel blessed to call you my friend. Weird how a simple thing like blogging and bring to souls together. It was so nice to have you as our guest in our inn. Unfortunately, from now on we shall have to meet elsewhere as Corey and I have made the decision to close the inn at the end of June. Lots of factors came under consideration but we feel it is best to cut our losses and move on to the next chapter of our lives. I’m looking forward to officially retiring next March so this decision comes with some plans for moving forward after that.
Enjoy your weekend! Enjoy your summer and we’ll see each other around in cyberworld.

Patricia, oh my! I suppose at some point you would get out of the BandB business, but I wasn’t ready for it. Are you selling or have you sold? I’ll always remember the times we were able to visit at the Baer House. My favorite time was watching the sunset with you and Corey in ’19. Enjoy your Memorial Day and I hope the house is filled with kind, courteous, and interesting travelers. Peace and keep making your days count.
Fifteen years? That is so remarkable, Clay! You really have a gift for making the days count. I know you’ll enjoy your weekend and the last six days of school! Your students are lucky kids!
Yes, 15 flies by doesn’t it? I never envisioned blogging this long, it just happened. It has been fueled by meeting interesting folks like you and many others. Keep making your days count!
Wow! Our children here in England soldier on till about the 19th July. On the other hand, they are off till September. Enjoy your well-deserved break!
July 19th! That is a long school year, but I suppose (and hope) there are longer breaks built in to make the days equal to our year of 172 days of in school for our students – at least in Illinois… though when I fact checked myself the internet returns 176 days! After summer break, we head back to school in mid-August. Like you I’ll spend the break making the days count. Stay well and enjoy your travels.
