Sign of the Week – June 21st

It’s the first FULL day of summer in the northern hemisphere. It’s where I live and where most of the world’s population lives also – it’s approximately a 90-10 spilt! It’s largely due to equity of land distribution – 68-32 spilt in favor of the northern hemisphere.

But this isn’t a geography lesson.

I saw something recently that explained one of the reasons for the decline in cognitive ability in aging adults (and that’s me) is when we stop creating.

MtDC is fifteen years old this summer going on sixteen and I’d like to see it continue to grow.

TRUE – a wonderful thought for the first day of summer, Wheaton, IL Friday, June 20, 2025

I have a blogger friend who ‘s Saturday post is always – Photos of the Week. Each week Wynne includes a sign she has come across in her travels during the week and it is always a good message. She peppers it with images from her family’s weekI look. I forward to her posts each Saturday morning.

In an effort to spur my creativity, I am going to try something new – a weekly sign of the week post. So today’s post is the start of something new, maybe this coming week I’ll find another sign, and next week it will be a streak. I hope I can maintain it.

I am a sporty person. I have written about football, wrestling, baseball, auto racing,  basketball, and many other sports since I began creating at MtDC in May 2010. I use the metaphor of a sport frequently in class and for some of my kiddos, it’s lost. But it does resonate with a few students. So I keep at it, like I want them to in class and life.

All it takes is to be kind.

It’s Saturday morning and I have a date at the food pantry. It’s my weekly dose of Saturday service to the community. All it really takes is getting up, getting going, and seizing the day. It encourages me to be kind, to be better. I have made a lot of friends over the past five and half years of volunteering at Loaves and Fishes – many of them clients who rely on us to fill their pantry or give them a lift for the week. Sometimes, no really most times, I get more from Loaves than my clients get from them. It’s a fair trade.

So I am going to jump up, jump in, and seize the day. Then edit and press post Making the Days Count, one day at a time, looking forward inspirations where ever I see it.

Have you seen a sign recently that encouraged you to be better?

    1. You are welcome, I may have jumped in the pool and committed too soon. I have had my eyes peeled looking for signs and they are not as abundant as I thought they were. Being kind is so simple, yet so elusive in our culture. thanks for stopping in, enjoy your Monday.

  1. Love this sign, Clay! And your comment that you often get more from your time volunteering than is handed out. Incredible wisdom!

Thanks for this shout out! Love that you are taking up the fun of looking for signs. There’s a lot of good wisdom out there to find! Hope you have a wonderful day!!

    1. You are welcome, I enjoy the fresh voice and photos of Surprised by Joy. And the wisdom. I kept my eyes open on my way home and visited my school which has a sign and a couple others – all had happy summer enjoy or congrats to the 8th grade or 5th grade classes which are moving up. I am going to have on top of it… the vet up at the lake has some good signs, but I won’t be there until Tuesday, 7/1. Have a wonderful Sunday, with school out it’s all Sundays until August or September.

    1. Yes it is ironic, but the Loaves and Fishes reference was one of the verses we used in my mother’s memorial service. She could stretch things for us when we’re growing up after my dad left. I found my way to the food pantry in an odd way, but I am glad to have landed there in January 2020. I looked around for other signs on the way there and back yesterday and came up with a whole bunch of nothing. I can going have to be more attentive as I drive around! Stay cool, it’s gonna be a scorcher today!

Thanks for visiting MtDC. How are YOU Making YOUR Days Count?
