Day 4: three days in

It’s officially the fourth day of my summer. It’s the last day of spring – if you’re a meteorologist, and I am headed back to school for the day.

The first three days of summer vacation – the weekend – flew past, as weekends tend to do, especially summer vacation weekends.

Saturday, W graduated and received his high school diploma.

Sunday all four of us, B, W, O, and I attended the Indy 500 – a family tradition on B’s side. It was our first race since 2012 and the 21st race I had seen. For W, it was # 9, O, – # 2, and for B – I don’t know the count but it is likely close to mine. B’s dad introduced the race to me when I moved to the Midwest in 1991. It was a good race and the winner went down to the wire – and ran out of fuel after the race was finished. It was a great day and we remembered B’s dad who, I am certain, was looking down on us and watching the race, too.

Monday was Memorial Day and O was in the parade. Actually, O is in the band that was in the parade, but that is a small distinction.

After the parade the kids – W and O went to the pool and B and I trimmed Ivy, then gave her a bath. She did not like the bath. It was clear by her howls, but she is clean and trimmed, for now.

Memorial Day is about remembering those who have fallen in defense of our country, it’s also for thinking of B’s dad and my dad who both served in the military. B’s dad served in the navy and my dad in the marines. We remember their service and all of those who sacrificed so that we can live freely.

We had burgers and dogs with all sorts of salads – coleslaw, cucumbers and onions, Asian cashew salad, and deviled eggs. On the deck in the warm evening as the sun set. It was a good evening to eat outside.

After we cleaned up, all of us went outside to see the stars and watch the International Space Station track across the sky. We watched the ISS until it was out of view, then turned our attention to Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn and the millions stars. I am looking forward to our visit to Michigan and less light pollution.

The first three days are complete, but certainly are not gone, the memories of how each day counted are what I have as I move forward. My summer is 82 days long, or short. It all depends on how I use it.

It’s all about making each day count, in some way. So, I’d better get a move on and jump up, jump in, and seize the day. Making the Days Count, one day at a time, even when I have to go back to school on a summer vacation day.

What are you doing today?

  1. Wow – that plate of food looks awesome and I’m not just saying that because I’m hungry right now. Sounds like you all had a great family weekend.

Here’s to the best next 82 days yet! Enjoy the time off.
