hydrogen and helium: elemental

It’s Sunday morning by the lake. Yesterday was Saturday and tomorrow, is Monday. It’s how the week rolls, it’s elemental.

When I woke Saturday morning, it was cool and overcast. By midday, it had warmed and the sun was out. I had to install a part on the boat lift in the lake. I gathered my tools, my camera, and waded into the lake. Ivy came with me paddling and O followed. The install took only a few minutes, I took photos of the new part, then I took photos of the lake.

earth, water, and air – the ancient elements

I have taken hundreds, maybe thousands, of photos of the lake, but most of the photos I have taken are from shore or from a boat.

I focused on South Bay where a rain cell raced across the lake.

I was able to capture several of the elements of life by the lake – the lake, the hills, and the clouds at once. Of course, there are the sunsets, but that’s for another time.

The rain shower passed and sunshine broke out across the lake. I spent the balance of the afternoon with a few more chores, then dinner, and finished the day watching the Perseid Meteor Showers with B, O, and our friends down the lake – sorry, no photos. As we watched those brief streaks of light crossing the night sky I thought of the elements hydrogen and helium.

There are 94 naturally occurring elements which makeup our Earth, another 24 elements are manmade. Hundreds of years ago the prevailing scientific theory was that the elements were earth, water, air, and fire. We know much more today, but two elements: hydrogen at almost 75% and helium at close to 25% comprise the entire universe.

It’s mid-August and September is a half a month away. We’re in the twilight of summer. One more week and it’s back to school and a regular schedule. In the meantime, there is time to make the days count, there is always time to make the days count. So, I’d better jump up, jump in, and seize the day. Making the Days Count, one day at a time, one memory stored away for the days ahead, it’s elemental.

What unusual or elemental connection did you make in your day, or night?

Today’s post is inspired by this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge: Elemental. For this week’s challenge, explore the classical elements of earth, air, water, and fire. How do you capture something invisible like air, or the movement of water? Or, more personally, is there a place you go to feel connected to the earth? Take a moment to explore these elements, in or out of balance, together or individually, as you pick up your camera this week.

  1. I always love your photos, Clay. It’s interesting to see how you use the WordPress challenge. I love your creativity. I’d have gone with “Elemental Dear Watson,” but that’s just me.

Seize the day. Kids are already back in school here in Vicksburg. Won’t be long now until Christmas.

    Have a great week.

    1. The weather here has been all over the place – yesterday it rained off and on and it made driving into the city for the Reds vs. Cubs such a joy…. weather is fluid, ever changing, and I can remember blistering summers and mild summers – it’s summer and I take what I can get. Take care and stay well. Peace.

      1. Ely, school is back in session and I’ve been overloaded and the blog takes a back seat or maybe in it’s in the trunk. Seems as though the weather has been the only thing I’ve been worried about since last Friday. And of course, school and the Astros! Have a great week.

    1. Yes indeed they have. And rolling across the lake the clouds are something. The lake view is special, I don’t get the same perspective at home. Have a great week, the lake is done until Labor Day weekend – it’s time to get down to the business of learning and a schedule. Have a great weekend.
